Is a BMI of 27 Overweight? Understanding the Scale

You calculated your BMI and it hit perfectly at 27. According to standard CDC charts, this places you in the "Overweight" category, which ranges from 25.0 to 29.9. But does this number actually mean you are unhealthy?

1. The Limitations of the Number

The BMI formula was created in the 1800s. It only takes height and weight into account. It is physically impossible for the BMI calculator to distinguish between 10 pounds of visceral fat and 10 pounds of lean muscle mass. If you are an athlete or strength train regularly, a BMI of 27 is incredibly common and entirely healthy.

2. Body Fat Percentage Matters More

Instead of panicking over a BMI of 27, modern health practitioners recommend looking at your actual body fat percentage and waist circumference. A woman with a BMI of 27 and a 28-inch waist is metabolically healthier than a woman with a "normal" BMI of 24 and a 34-inch waist.

3. Ethnic and Age Variations

Research has continually shown that the health risks associated with a BMI of 27 vary wildly by ethnicity and age. For older adults, carrying a slightly higher BMI (like 27) is actually associated with better bone density and longer life expectancy compared to being strictly "normal weight."

4. What Should You Do?

Use your BMI of 27 as a baseline metric, not a diagnosis. Pair it with a waist-to-hip ratio measurement and focus on blood pressure and cholesterol numbers before attempting to rapidly drop weight.
