Mastering Basal Body Temperature for Conception
Our ovulation calculator utilizes time-tested Naegele math based on your menstrual dates. However, pairing our math with real-world biological metrics like Basal Body Temperature (BBT) yields the highest precision possible.
1. What is BBT?
Basal body temperature is your body's lowest resting temperature. It can only be accurately measured precisely when you wake up, before you sit up, talk, or go to the bathroom. You must use a thermometer specifically designed for BBT tracking, capable of displaying two decimal places.
2. The Hormonal Spike
Right before ovulation, estrogen dominates and your temperature suppresses slightly. Within 24-48 hours after ovulation occurs, the corpus luteum releases a flood of progesterone. This hormone naturally raises your core temperature by roughly 0.4 to 0.8 degrees Fahrenheit.
3. Seeing the Shift
If you track daily, you will see a sudden, sustained spike in your temperature graph. This confirms that ovulation has just occurred. Because the egg only survives for 12 to 24 hours, intercourse should ideally take place in the days leading up to this spike.
4. Consistency is Everything
Alcohol, poor sleep, travel, or even getting out of bed 30 minutes earlier than normal can destroy the integrity of your BBT reading. Absolute consistency is paramount for BBT charting to be effective.
